Rafael III J. Prudente, a 4th-year BS in Software Engineering student at CPU prepares to accept his 2024 Outstanding UNESCO Youth Leader Award in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, recognizing his work to bridge the digital divide and advocate for inclusive education.
Rafael III J. Prudente, a 4th-year BS in Software Engineering student at ĢƵ (CPU), has been selected as the recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Club for UNESCO Youth Leaders award (College Level). This prestigious award is conferred annually by the National Coordinating Body of Clubs for UNESCO in the Philippines, recognizing exceptional youth leaders who have significantly contributed to their communities through innovative programs and initiatives.
Prudente was chosen from a pool of 65 applicants across the country due to his outstanding leadership and community-driven initiatives. His work with the I Love Lambunao Volunteer Team, as well as his involvement in tech-focused initiatives at CPU, earned him the accolade. The announcement was made via a Facebook post from UNESCO Club Philippines, which also highlighted the unanimous approval of his nomination by the organizationĢƵs board.
In an exclusive interview, Prudente shared his thoughts on the recognition: ĢƵAfter submitting my documents and presenting myself during the panel interview, I told myself that I did my best and would trust God with whatever the outcome would be, without any expectations. When the results came out and I was selected as one of the 8 collegiate awardees out of 65 applicants from across the country, I felt truly blessed and grateful. ItĢƵs a great honor to represent the I Love Lambunao Volunteer Team and ĢƵ.ĢƵ
The award ceremony will take place during the 2024 International Assembly of Youth for UNESCO (Y4U) at the City State Asturias Hotel in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. Prudente is expected to receive his award on December 1, 2024.
Prudente believes that being a youth leader is about more than personal achievement. “I believe being a youth leader goes beyond yourself; it’s about creating opportunities for your members and seeing them grow. The sense of fulfillment is even greater because I started from the same place. I had many amazing and inspiring mentors who pushed and molded me into who I am today. With that, this award is not just mineĢƵit belongs to all those who witnessed and supported my growth.”
One of the key factors that contributed to PrudenteĢƵs recognition is his leadership in various community projects. As the President of the Philippine Society of Software Engineers and the Lead for Google Developer Student Clubs at CPU, he spearheaded initiatives aimed at promoting digital literacy, particularly through the “Tech4All” program. This initiative, in collaboration with his mentor, Ariessa Ko, focused on bridging the digital divide and making technology accessible to underserved communities. He has also worked with the iTeach 2.0 program, which promotes inclusive education by making technology accessible to underserved communities.
In addition to his tech-oriented projects, Prudente has also played a significant role in environmental and educational efforts with the I Love Lambunao Volunteer Team, a group he has been part of since 2017. Through various environmental activities and educational drives, the team has made a lasting impact on the Lambunao community.
Prudente also offered advice to aspiring young leaders: “Start by getting involved in smaller projects or activities within your community. Find something youĢƵre passionate aboutĢƵwhether itĢƵs tech, environmental issues, or helping othersĢƵand focus on that. DonĢƵt be afraid to take the initiative. Look for mentors who can guide you and provide support. Leadership is about service and making a difference. ItĢƵs not just about being in charge but about creating opportunities for others and helping them grow.”
Reflecting on his leadership journey, Prudente acknowledged the importance of mentors in his development. “My parents, Josenia and Rafael Prudente, Jr., have always been supportive of my academic and youth leadership activities. I am also deeply grateful to my mentor, Sir Stephen Lloyd Casono, who encouraged me to submit an entry for the UNESCO Outstanding Youth Leader Awards. Ariessa Ko has been instrumental in the success of the Tech4All initiative, and Ro-anne Lozada and Lovelyn Losaria have consistently provided opportunities for me to grow.”
